Book Recommendation Saturday-Debutante Dropout

I just started the fourth book in this series by Susan McBride, having totally loved the first three. The main protagonists, Andy Kendricks, the anti-deb daughter of high society widow, Cissy, both live, work (Andy) and do charity fundraising (Cissy) in Dallas. To get me interested in a series, you’ve gotta have characters I enjoy and watching Andy and Cissy try to reconcile their relationship is a hoot. Cissy wants Andy to use her trust fund and become a “lady who lunches”. Andy wants to create websites for non-profits and do her artwork.

Naturally, I mean, this is a mystery series, Andy gets herself into situations that require amateur investigation and sometimes wild antics. Her boyfriend, defense attorney Brian Malone, and her mother’s maid and Andy’s former nanny, Sandy Beck, provide backup or a shoulder to cry on. Even Cissy has been known to get into the act and even initiate investigations. Sometimes you want to hold Andy back but however crazy things get, she always come out ok.

These are fun reads with mildly interesting mysteries. What I like most about them is the relationship between Andy and Cissy. What could have stayed a stereotyped portrait of a mother and daughter as polar opposites has grown into two women seeing the depth and importance of each other, while still having major differences in their lifestyles.

And since I’m running behind this week, due to tummy troubles, here’s my Wishful Thinking Sunday:

James Lipton asks all his Inside the Actor’s Studio guests, when you get to the Pearly Gates, what do you imagine God saying to you. My answer would be, Yes, Mare, Heaven IS a library.

Potpourri Friday

I meant to do this yesterday but I’m a bit under the weather… So, here’s Potpourri Friday on Saturday morning…

The Mom said she was sending me a box this week. She'd only tell me that she wished she could be there to see my face when I opened it.

Here's a glimpse:

She loves jewelry and bought a lot of scrimshaw in the 70's:

She also bought a lot of flashy, colorful cocktail rings:

Here's some sentimental faves--my grandmother loved Lady Slippers

We both love Amethyst:

And this is a set my father sent to my mother from Japan when he was on leave from Korea.

So, it was a surprise, to say the least, when I opened the box. There are a lot of things I'm keeping, but the rings are mostly too big and she said I could sell them, so I've gotta fire up the Ebay account sometime soon. Some of the scrimshaw will go on Etsy, since I know that's in the vintage range.

So, thanks Ma! For both some really cool jewelry and maybe a little cash as well!

One World, One Heart Blogging Event

I found out about this event at the last minute and I’m so glad I did. It’s an event for bloggers and the purpose is to find one another in this great big blogging world!

Photo

This is how creator, Lisa Swifka, describes the event:

I created this event in 2007. The original idea behind this giveaway event was to bring bloggers together from around the world who may never ordinarily meet. It closes the gap of the blog community and enables us to interact, discover new and wonderful people, and in the process possibly win a prize or many prizes along the way. 2007 had roughly 85-90 participants and many connections were made because of it......friendships that are still going strong.
We had a strong showing the first year for sure, and then in 2008 we had just about tripled that number. In 2009 there were 911 participants, to say I was amazed is an understatement. 28 countries were represented in the 2009 event as well. This is more than wanting to win something.......that is only the means.......in the end it's about finding kindred spirits. Someone who may be fairly new to blogging, not sure how to navigate, find others and have others find them....Some are long time bloggers and in some cases well known in the blogging community. Whatever the case it brings all of them together. This is an INTERNATIONAL event that has and had participants from the US, Canada, France, Sweden, Germany, Finland, Malaysia, Brazil, The Netherlands, Australia, New Zealand, Scotland, Ireland, England,Wales, Slovenia and more. It transcends geographical location, socio economics, political affiliation, religious beliefs......it's a coming together like the giant community we are on this planet. If only it took a simple giveaway to create PEACE everywhere, in the mean time here we give from our hearts. We are not solving the worlds problems nor are we curing anything nor are we changing the world. We are merely generating a closer community between humans through blogging. What more could I ask for, my little idea has surpassed my wildest dreams of what it could become.

How cool is that?? So, here’s my little giveaway:

I couldn’t give away just one heart~this necklace has a bazillion hearts! Or maybe it just looks like a bazillion. The pendant I found on one of my yard saling expeditions. When I found the bright connected hearts chain, I knew my pendant had found a home. And, well, the heart toggle begged to be included!

To enter the contest, just leave a comment on this blog post. One entry per person. Also leave an email address for notification if you should win. Using this format will keep the Evil Internet Bots from being able to access your email for spam - myemailaddress at aol dot com. The contest ends at midnight PST on February 14th (The Heart Holiday) and I’ll announce a winner on February 15.

I’m really looking forward to checking out the other blogging participants during this event. Thank goodness we have 3 weeks to do all this virtual visiting!

Good luck and hope I get to see YOUR blog!

Wishful Thinking Sunday

I’m using Wishful Thinking Sunday’s to express things I would like to see happen in my life. Some things I’m actively working on and some things are just hopes for the future. I know that wishing starts the process but actively working toward the conclusion is required. So, Sunday’s will include some true goals and some future whimsy.

This is Fallingwater. It’s one of Frank Lloyd Wright’s most amazing structures. Located in the boonies of Pennsylvania, someday I’ll get there to see it, hopefully along with my BFF and our Husbands. Her Husband is a trained architect who loves FLW and also has a level of desire to see it that’s probably higher than mine. My Husband will enjoy it, too, but I think his interest lies more to the east, in the battlefields of Gettysburg.

Book Recommendation Saturday- Crimes of Fashion Series

You don't have to know a Donna Karan from a Michael Kors to enjoy the Crimes of Fashion mysteries, featuring Lacey Smithsonian. Fashion clues are just a small part of the stories woven by Ellen Byerrum and taking place in Washington DC, the Land Fashion Forgot.

Lacey is a reporter on the fashion beat for a fictitious DC newspaper, by way of the police beat in Sagebrush, Colorado. Somehow, as happens in all my favorite amateur sleuth mysteries, Lacey is always smack in the middle of a murder investigation. And I don't think I'm giving anything away by saying she always comes out on top.

Filled with a motley bunch of endearing characters, including Stella, her spikey haired hair stylist, her best friend, Brooke, an attorney with a true belief in conspiracy theories, her editor, Mac, and a hotter than hot love interest from her Sagebrush days, Lacey always has someone to back her up. Even her mother and sister, who make an appearance in Hostile Makeover, are a load of fun and not as obnoxious as she thinks.

The aspect I like best about Lacey is that she inherited an old trunk from her favorite aunt that's filled with vintage patterns and materials that she has made into period suits when she has the cash. Her love of classic fashion and her late aunt add a very emotional aspect to this series and there's even one book, Designer Knockout, that revolves around that trunk.

This series has everything I like in my "cozies"~a strong female lead, a great cast of supporting characters, good writing and a love interest, not necessarily in that order. Plus all the allusions to the 40's and Lacey's independent spirit make this a series I'm hoping will continue for a good long time.

I just found out that two of the books have been made into Lifetime TV movies. To check out the author and movies, go here: http://www.ellenbyerrum.com/

Getting Ready to Teach

Teaching is one of the things on my list of things to do for 2010. In August, I'll be teaching a class to make a certain chain weave, for earrings or a necklace.

I know when I take a class, I like to have detailed instructions that I can refer to when I'm home and can't remember how the heck that technique worked. So my plan is to have my nails done with a French manicure and have The Husband take some pictures as I make one of the sections of chain. Then I’ll create an instruction sheet, complete with photos and step by step explanations of the weave. After that, I'll make notes for me to speak from, first showing how you open a jump ring and ending with ideas for earrings, necklaces, bracelets and anklets.

I also need to come up with a materials and tool list. And samples of projects.

Sounds easy, right? Ahem... I think I left out the fear of public speaking... I've actually done a talk on home decor in my days as a redesigner, that I called Shelf Respect. I did it twice, complete with a shelf full of books, knick knacks and action figures. Not enough time to actually lose the jitters and soak in some self confidence... But since this will be more interactive, maybe it will be a bit easier. I always got the feeling that the people I was speaking to were rooting for me to enlighten and entertain them. My "students" will want the same thing, only they get to take home something pretty they made themselves, with my help.

If you teach a class, I'd be happy for any pointers/tips! I've got plenty of time to prepare and incorporate any helpful hints you can give!

Daily Blogging!?

Sitting at work today, doing a necessary but extremely boring task, I decided I want to try to blog every day. I thought it might be interesting to have a daily theme, so here’s what I came up with:

Monday~Encouraging Words We all need those

Tuesday~Favorite Etsy Shops A way to share some of my favorite shops and artists

Wednesday~Wordless Wednesday Always interesting on other people’s blogs

Thursday~Eight Things Lists A way to get to know me and I might even get to know myself better

Friday~Potpourri Whatever Strikes My Fancy

Saturday~Book Review What or Who I’ve been reading

Sunday~Wishful Thinking Spinning fantasies that might come true…

So, since I’m starting on Tuesday, I’m going to introduce you to my friend, Melinda, who you’ve seen before. She’s the amazing metalsmith who made my stars ring.

Here’s one of her outrageous pins:

The unique thing about Melinda’s coin pendants is that she gives them dimension.

In her own words, she “surrounds the coin with sterling silver wire in two layers so the chain can slip between the wires and show off the coin to its best advantage.” Someday, I’m going to ask her to do The Old Man of the Mountain quarter for me!

You can find her on Etsy and most Saturdays, she has a booth at the Irvine Farmers Market by the University. She also belongs to the Bead Society of Orange County, which is where I was fortunate enough to meet her.

January Doldrums

January has not been as productive as I would like, so far. The double whammy of a sinus infection and some stomach issue I’ve had since the day before Christmas has blocked my more creative endeavors. Although I have made a lot of earrings and one pretty interesting necklace. When I get my head (and body) together, there will be lots of pics and Etsy postings…

I did some errands this morning and thought I’d show you what I got at Borders. But when I went to take a couple of quick shots, Raina and Watson got into the act:

Creative Beading is a beautiful, slick magazine from Australian and it’s the one that got me into chain making. It’s wicked expensive but worth it! And Eggsecutive Orders, the new Ollie Paras book by my Facebook pal, Julie Hyzy, came out this week. Thanks, Borders, for the 33% off coupon! Every little bit helps!

I can’t wait to delve into both these little gems. I’ve already gotten some jewelry ideas, just leafing through the magazine at the store. And if you haven’t read the White House Chef mysteries yet, run, don’t walk, to your local bookstore or library. Ollie is a great character and Julie’s writing makes you feel like you’re in the kitchen, cooking for the president!

Napoleon Redux

Déjà vu? Non, my cheries! I took The Husband to the Napoleon exhibit and this time I had my new Canon The Mom sent for Christmas. So please bear with me as we take another journey with Napoleon (this time with better pix).

Why a metal boat in a parking garage? No idea, mes amies...

Pretty fountain outside Muzeo

A study of rays from Napoleon's Egyptian journey

Close up of an oil painting with a hint of glitter.

Beautiful embroidery on a jacket worn at the coronation.

Check out the lush buttons!

Close up of embroidered bee from a kneeler used at the coronation. So amazing to see these artifacts from the actual coronation!

Be still my heart! Here's the ring I tried to photograph before. This is so sparkly in person! Gorgeous!!

The Ring again, with a watch given by Marie-Louise (the wife after Josephine) and some other jewels. And check out the little piece of beautiful blue and gold fabric from ML's bedroom. Luxe!

Napoleon's campaign bed and lounge, used while warring... Check out the rug...

The end of the exhibit. The Husband says this looks like a postcard.

The piece d'resistance-an actual hat of Napoleon's. The summer version. With the reflection of a bust of the man himself. I meant to do that. No, really!

And then back outside for The Husbands' Napoleon impression--yes, he's made a little pocket in the shirt so he could stick his hand in... And he found out today that Napoleon was taller than him. Turns out N. is 5'6", not 5'2"...

One of the things I want to do this year as a personal goal is do more things--experience more, which means more museum visits, going to arboretums, special events, movies and things like that. Sometimes I hold myself back, citing traffic and parking and fees, oh my! But most things are close enough and fees aren't so astronomical, some things are even free. I need to stop making excuses and go do things! I'm a bit of a homebody and that has to change. Today was a good start! So...
