If you've never been to the Cerritos Library, it's a treat in itself. One full wall in the lobby is a salt water aquarium and the Children's Library boasts a full size tree replica. Let the Holiday Shopping Begin!!

Yesterday while The Husband worked, I created this year’s Bear Chick Christmas necklaces, all made with those cool stained glass Christmas trees I bought last weekend. Here’s a glimpse. Click on the picture to find the listing on Etsy.

The most elaborate, for those really special occasions.

The cool colors, for someone who loves Christmas but wants to be a little different.

And for those who want to make a simple statement.

I had fun making these and I hope you all like them!

Because The Husband works every Thanksgiving (time and a half--yippee!), we always eat around 7PM. We stuff ourselves and then fall asleep. Very unhealthy but scrumptious! Hope everyone had a lovely, yummy Thanksgiving!

And remember, shipping is still free at my Etsy shops till December 15!

Raw Materials or Bear Chick’s Excellent Adventure

Yesterday I set out to do some errands and visit a friend’s studio sale. I had coupons for one hobby store in my hot little hands and was delighted to find a 20% off Moving Sale at a bead shop I decided to check out. I buy most of my beads and findings wholesale but I LOVE looking in bead shops and I’ll pick up unique things I can’t get from my wholesalers. I can wander around a bead shop for hours, imagining what I’d create with this or that and if I use this for that, I’ll need these, too… It can be SOOOO dangerous! Here’s what I found:

This is just a small portion of what I bought. I also got a lot of toggles and other charms and things I couldn’t do without…

I just HAD to have these Christmas trees! And the beads will be part of a Charm N Bead Dragon necklace.

Had to have these hearts! And aren't those aqua beads cool? They look knotted.

I'd never seen these beach chairs or movie camera's before, so I had to have them. I loved the color of these rectangular beads and the netted round beads are awesome. I always end up wishing I'd bought more!

After visiting a farmers market to check out the craft area and walking around at South Coast Plaza with a stop for lunch at In and Out, I finally made it to my friend, Maria’s, studio sale. She does beautiful etchings and jewelry. But what I really envy is her studio and house with 2 bedroom studios. Her garage has a small addition that she had dry walled and windows installed last year. That’s her “dirty” studio, where she can paint and be messy. The two studios in her house are “clean”, for jewelry and non-painted art. *Sigh* Someday I will have dedicated work space!

Look for these raw materials in my work soon, especially those darling Christmas trees! I wish I’d bought more…

Fire and Smoke and Ash! Oh My!

Yesterday around 2 I realized the light in my living room had an orange hue. I knew what that meant--fire. That’s when I started to smell smoke. So I went out to the end of my driveway and this is what I saw:

We’re smack in the middle of Brea/Anaheim Hills/Yorba Linda, then being called the Freeway Complex fire. Last night Carbon Canyon was added and this morning Chino Hills and Diamond Bar came into the mix and now it’s called the Triangle Complex fire. I don’t think we’ve ever been this close to a fire this big. We’ve seen fire in the hills in Yorba Linda but the problem with this weekend’s fire was the Santa Ana winds kicking up. The Brea fire is about 2 miles from us, which seems like a safe distance I suppose but the fire crossed a freeway in Yorba Linda! For those of you not familiar with freeways in Cali, the 91 probably has at least 8 lanes where the fire jumped it. So 2 miles away doesn’t seem that far in view of Mother Nature’s leaping ability!

The Husband came home from work early when I texted him the picture above. We made a list of things we’d grab in case of evacuation (cats topped the list, plus a couple of The Husbands’ guitars and all my finished jewelry, and of course essentials like prescription drugs and cat food). Then we tried to relax. At 11PM, we walked outside to see if we could see any flames on the hills around us. No flames but the moon was as orange as a pumpkin. We kept the TV on through the night and this morning the color of the sky was normal, although there’s still plenty of dark smoke in part of the sky and the air quality is very bad--smoke and black ash as big as moths. I feel for folks with asthma and allergies. Here’s what our street and car looks like this morning:

Piles of ash, like autumn leaves.

Accumulated ash on the windshield of our van.

So, it seems that the worst is over. The winds have died down and the firefighters, God bless ‘em, seem to have more control over the situation. I know people in Yorba Linda, Chino Hills, Anaheim Hills and Diamond Bar and I’ve been praying that everyone’s ok. Hopefully, no one lost houses but I’ll find out at work tomorrow. We’re a generous group--if anyone needs help, we’ll contribute. When Hurricane Andrew hit our group in Miami, we all sent gift certificates to retail stores that were divided among the folks who needed them to build their households again. Hopefully, that won’t be necessary but we’ll see!

Badge Leashes on Etsy

The Husband has been encouraging (nagging??) me to list my badge leashes on Etsy and I finally did. Yippee!

So many people have to wear badges for their Day Jobs now, why not have some style and protect your clothing at the same time? I purposely created a very simple design so the leash doesn’t clash with any necklace you might want to wear to work.

They’re made to order and you get to pick the length, color of the beads and color of the clips. You can find the listing here: http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=17362964

I also listed a couple of new necklaces:

This is an awesome focal bead (1 1/2") that I bought ages ago from an artist in Louisiana.

Handmade chain in a flower pattern.

The latest Charm N Bead Necklace in my fave color, purple. I've been calling the charm on the right an overstuffed chair but it may be a sofa... I loved the grandfather clock! This also has a couple of kitties and purple roses that I cannabalized from a bracelet. It's called The Comfort of Home necklace.

Come on by soon with your Christmas lists. The free earrings with purchase is still in effect, till December 15. Just tell me in the Comments Section at checkout whether you want pierced or clip on. 1 pair of earrings for each item ordered!

Early New Year's Resolutions for Bear Chick

It's not even Thanksgiving and I'm already thinking about next year. Here are some goals and things I want to put in place for my business.

Redesign my craft fair set up, complete with Bear Chick banner

New car magnets--the old ones don't mention Etsy

Apply to juried, handmade only shows. No more competing with Cookie Lee and crap made in China

Maintain a marketing calendar, for social networking and other promotional activities

Join a real, live networking group, preferably a chamber of commerce or a women's group, with ties to the community

Learn more about chain making

Get into metal stamping so I can make my own custom charms

Take command of my toaster oven so I can make polymer clay creations that aren't undercooked (floppy) or overcooked (blackened)

Just 'cause I like a blog with at least one picture, here's a sweet little vintage gold tone and garnet pin, currently for sale on Etsy.

Ode to High Speed Posting!

La la la! Singing the praises of high speed internet! I was able to post 5 new vintage jewelry listings on Etsy tonight. Can you say effortless? For those of you who haven't read any of my travails regarding dial up, let me just say that trying to list 5 things on Etsy a month ago would have taken all night and a year off my life!

I love to buy old jewelry at yard sales and church bazaars. Some go into new jewelry pieces or artwork but some are real finds, either signed (which means the name of the manufacturer is stamped on the back) or not. Here's a couple of things I posted tonight:

Here's a beautiful pair of Richelieu earrings. The pearl is peeling just slightly but otherwise they're in great condition, with all the shiny shiny rhinestones intact.

Are these a blast from the past, or what?! Do you remember sweater guards or clips? I wore them when I was a kid. You clipped each side of the collar of your sweater so it wouldn't fall off when you had the sweater draped over your shoulders. These are classics signed by Judy Lee.

I picked up this apple because I was impressed that all the rhinestones were intact. This little baby really shines! It would make a unique teacher's gift just because of the blue color.

Come on by bearchick.etsy.com to see more vintage and handmade items I've posted in the last few weeks. And remember, domestic and Canadian shipping is free till December 15!

Just Posted on Etsy!

The Husband is waiting for me so we can watch the final two episodes of Deadwood - you know I'll be making something new as we watch! But I wanted to share a couple of cool things I just posted.

This is a resin necklace and it's so bright and fun! I confess I wear most of what I make at least once so I know (in my paranoid little brain) that it's not going to fall apart and when I wore this to work, I got a ton of compliments on it. I've been perfecting my wrapped loops. Plain loops, without the twirly layers of wire at the top of the bead, are fine for small beads and when I'm connecting to chain (see below) but I like to do the wrapped loops on bigger beads and long bead combinations, just for security.

And here's my newest thing, chains I've made myself using jump rings. I've always loved pattern and this plays right into my obsession. I've been making the one/two chains, with one ring, connecting with two rings, then one, then two. But the "flower chain" is really cool. It takes a little patience but it looks sweet and delicate, with three rings connecting to one. The turquoise necklace above is a good example.
Off to watch Deadwood and make a purple chain necklace!

Just got home from a day at Sea World and found that I’ve been tagged by Kim VanDerHoek, of VanDerHoek Art, a talented artist right here in the OC. Thanks Kim! Because of this, I finally figured out how to use the links!

Playing tag is a great way to explore all the other blogs out there.

The rules of the game are simple:

* Link to your tagger and list these rules on your blog.

* Share 7 facts about yourself on your blog, some random, some weird.

* Tag 7 people at the end of your post by leaving their names as well as links to their blog. Sorry, I could only come up with 4...

* Don't forget to let them know they have been tagged by leaving a comment on their blog.

Here’s my 7 facts:

1. Whenever I have mashed potatoes and corn, I have to smoosh them together. It’s really the only way to eat them.

2. I grew up in Massachusetts but lost my accent as soon as I crossed the California border.

3. I’ve been married 28.4 years.

4. My favorite books, in no particular order, are I Never Promised You a Rose Garden, To Kill a Mockingbird and The Cracker Factory.

5. When I got out of school in the Bad Ole Days of the 70’s I wanted to be a stewardess (we hadn’t advanced to “attendants” yet) but I was too short.

6. When I came to California, I wanted to be an actress so I took an acting class on Hollywood Blvd. That’s where I met my husband. And that was the only acting class I ever took.

7. I don’t wanna get old but I guess I hafta…

Here I am playing in the kid's area at Sea World. See, I don't wanna get old!

Here are my taggee's:

Chris Kerr--whose jewelry I admire totally
A Crazy Cats Life--love her take on the world
Kathy Martin Studios--Talented artist, funny teacher
ArtbyMar--talented and very nice Etsy buddy

I would have added Smashgirl, another OC/Etsy buddy who does cool mosaics, but she's already done this...
